We started out the month with a concert by the Cleverly's at the Don Gibson Theatre. They were just as funny and talented as last year. Since the Cleverly's show, every time I slice a fresh tomato I laugh remembering their line, "You say To-Ma-toe and I say 'Mater". Those guys are from Arkansas, but they could easily be from Lattimore.
David and I went back to our roots at Shelby City Park when we helped put together the First Annual Friends of the Parks Golf Tournament. That was a fun time for a good cause. David brought out the big cooker for ribs, bbq and chicken and Harry and his Elves came over to make homemade hush pups and fries.
Everybody has a City Park story and we enjoyed hearing and remembering. One of my memories is of many summer days riding my banana seat bicycle from Warren Street. I can still see those streamers flying from the high handlebars and feel the freedom as I pedal first to the Sealtest place on the corner for a quick hot dog and on to the City Park to play with friends. We would swim and ride the train and merry-go-round or play on the big airplane and fire truck. Harry remembered that his first job ever was taking tickets up at the train. The pool is awesome, the golf course is in great shape and the new ball fields are coming along. We still need to get the tennis courts in shape but the train is still running and the merry-go-round still going in circles with children of all ages.
It felt good to be involved at the Park for a lot of reasons. I think mainly it was the satisfaction you feel when something comes full circle. We have good memories of fun times there as kids and our boys played basketball and football there. But its an even fuller circle because David's great-grandfather, Dr. S. S. Royster donated the land for the park. The golf course is named in his memory. Recently, Bobby donated the portrait of Dr. S. S. to the Park and we think that is the perfect place for it to be.
And talk about full circle. My grandmother, Alma Hunt, mentioned Dr. S. S. in her writings "Things I Remember". She wrote these memories years before David and I were married. Nanny was born in 1888 and was writing of a time when she was a little girl in Lattimore. She wrote, "The nearest Dr. was Dr. S. S. Royster at Mooresboro which was about five miles away if anyone was sick enough to need a doctor. Some one had to ride a mule to Mooresboro after Dr. Royster. He had a horse and buggy and would be there in about an hour."
My how some things have changed.
Some things haven't changed. We celebrated Father's Day with Dad at his favorite lunch spot - Wendy's. We sat in a circle at the round table and enjoyed the conversation and then Cindy presented Dad with a special Father's Day gift. A fur coat for his dog - Happy. In true Hunt tradition, a good portion of the conversation was guessing how much Cindy had paid at the second hand store for Happy's fur coat.
Another thing came full circle in June. After 36 years several of my Appalachian State University freshman dorm friends decided to have a reunion. None of us could believe it had actually been 36 years since we were together but like friends do, we picked right up where we left off. We were still us. We had a great time laughing and talking and sharing old memories. We made some new memories too including learning how to Wobble. It had nothing to do with the Cowboy Lemonade. I promise.
The Wobble is a line dance and since we had the handy Ipad, we watched YouTube videos over and over. Then we practiced and practiced until we, too, could Wobble. You would have thought we were back in Cannon Dorm in 1975. We had a blast - then and now.
Circles are symbolic of everlasting love and friendship. I am very grateful that June has given me reasons to appreciate many circles.
Cowboy Lemonade
Summertime calls for lemonade and this one has a kick to it. My friend, Cindy, shared this recipe with me several years ago. I don't make it often and that is a very good thing. But I did decide to make it for my college pal reunion. We made a very good decision to only make one batch. Enjoy sparingly.
1 12 oz can frozen lemonade concentrate
1 can of water
1 can of vodka
2 Corona Lights (or your beer of choice)
